Photographing Children
Photographing children can be quite a challenge. How
you ever passed by one of the photo studios located in a department
store and seen the photographer trying to deal with a cranky or
sobbing child and a frustrated parent and thought how difficult that
must be for the photographer?
Here are some special tips that can help.
Be spontaneous.
Children are very spontaneous and sometimes the best photographs of
them catch them in spontaneous moments. Also, instead of a studio
setting, consider photographing the child in a setting that
emphasizes the child's interests or hobbies. If they play sports,
photograph them with items used in their sport. If they have a pet
or love horses photograph them with their pet. Photographs that
bring out aspects of the child's personality are often more
meaningful to them and their parents than traditional studio shots.
Above all else, be
patient especially when working with young children. Try to schedule
plenty of time to shoot so that the child is not rushed and you have
time to let them get comfortable with their environment and with
you. Always make sure a parent is nearby to help keep the child calm
when working with babies or toddlers. Have toys that they can play
with. It is also helpful if the parent brings a toy along from home, perhaps a
favorite stuffed animal, that the child finds comforting.
With lots of
patience, a photographer can capture images of a child that the
parents will treasure forever. Children are one of the most
challenging photography subjects but also one of the most rewarding.
